What do we cover?
Depending on what you choose, the policy can include one or more of the following:
Public Liability — protects you (as organiser or attendee) if a member of the public is injured or their property is damaged because of the event.
Employer's Liability — covers you for legal liability if someone you employ (or a volunteer/helper under your supervision) is injured at the event.
Event Equipment/Property Cover — covers the loss, accidental damage, or theft of equipment or items you own or hire for the event (for example, sound systems, staging, marquees, etc;).
Cancellation, Abandonment or Postponement Cover — reimburses your irrecoverable costs if the event needs to be cancelled, abandoned, or postponed for reasons outside your control.
Re-arrangement Costs — in some cases, if circumstances threaten the event, the policy may cover reasonable extra costs needed to reschedule or salvage it.
The policy is designed to cover both one-off events and multiple events (for regular event-organisers), with flexibility to include whichever parts of the cover you need.
What does the policy not cover?
Cover is only in force if the relevant section is included in your policy schedule.
Some claims have an 'excess' — e.g. small damage or loss under a certain value might not be covered, depending on the policy terms.
Damage/injury caused by intentional acts (vandalism, malicious behaviour), or by 'dangerous activities' (e.g. use of certain inflatables, motorised vehicles, etc.) may be excluded — check what is defined as a 'dangerous activity'.
Theft is usually only covered if there has been 'forcible or violent entry/exit' from a secured location.
Pre-existing problems (e.g. known issues with the venue, or circumstances you were already aware of when taking out the policy) are excluded.
Cover may exclude certain perils such as contagious disease (e.g. pandemics) or other general-exclusion events defined in policy wording — always check the full policy wording.
Bear in mind that Event Insurance is a comparison service. If you want to know exactly what a policy covers, guessing won't cut it. Every insurer has their own rulebook full of conditions, limits and exclusions. Those details live in the policy wording and product information documents. That's the paperwork that spells out everything from what's protected and what isn't.
When getting a quote or having an events insurance policy, you’d need to speak to each relevant insurer for their cover levels and policy documents for more information.
